The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games concluded today (5 September).  Shuttlers CHU Man Kai and CHAN Ho Yuen clinched a silver and a bronze to Hong Kong’s medal tally, seeing Hong Kong to finish the Games at 68th place with 2 silver and 3 bronze.

CHAN Ho Yuen edged out South Korea’s Kyung Hoon KIM 24-22 and 21-10 in the third place playoff and sealed a bronze.  CHU Man Kai was defeated by India’s Krishna NAGAR 17-21, 21-16, 17-21 in final and added a silver.  With the sport making it debut in this summer’s Games, the silver and bronze were historic badminton medals won.

The Closing Ceremony were held tonight at Olympic Stadium.  Silver medal winner was named as Hong Kong’s flag bearer.  He was delight and honoured to be selected, “It was a perfect ending to my journey for being select to carry the flag for Hong Kong after winning a medal.  And I wish to see you in Paris for the next Summer Paralympics.”  The Governor of Tokyo, Yuriko Koike passed the Paralympic flag to International Paralympic Committee President, Andrew PARSONS, who then passed it to the Mayor of Paris, Anne HIDALGO, symbolizing the handover of the Games to Paris.

Hong Kong Delegation Chef de Mission, WU Siu Ling said, “Hong Kong athletes have been making full effort to compete at the Games and their determination is inspiring.  With the valuable experience gained at Tokyo under the COVID-19 pandemic, Hong Kong team will continue to excel in the Asian Para Games held next year and Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.  We are most grateful to the Government for purchasing the broadcasting rights, so members of the public could enjoy watching the competitions, support Hong Kong team and learn more about Para sport.  We wish Hong Kong team’s outstanding performance could encourage more physically impaired to take their first step in sports.”

Badminton team will return home with Cathay Pacific Airways flight CX521 on 7 September afternoon and are expected to arrive at 9:20pm (Hong Kong time).
